OWNER, HEAD COACH
Owner, Debbie Johnson, was born and raised in Maspeth, New York. She has lived in Florida since 1988. Debbie has been involved in gymnastics since she was 8 years old, and saw Olga Korbut compete in the 1972 Olympics.
As a gymnast, Debbie was a member of the Grover Cleveland High School gymnastics team for four (4) years. She was Team Captain her Junior and Senior years and was named “Most Valuable Player” during her Senior year. She also qualified for the New York City Championships for Vault in her Junior and Senior year. At International Gymnastics Camp, she was voted “Most Dedicated” by her team of coaches.
Debbie began coaching when she was 14 years old for a small program at Maspeth Town Hall. After graduating high school, she also coached at Grover Cleveland for several years.
Upon moving to Florida, Debbie started coaching at the Martin County YMCA where she had the privilege of mentoring with Head Coach Stefan Bogdan, former National Team Coach for Romania and West Germany National Head Coach. Debbie acquired valuable knowledge and experience, and began to develop her philosophy in coaching/teaching.
Following a move to Sarasota, Debbie worked for the Venice YMCA, moving up to the position of Director and Head Coach. In 1997, she accepted a Director position at a South Orlando gym, where she coached for 12 years, developing and coordinating the implementation of their gymnastics and cheer programs.
In 2010, Debbie realized her life-long dream of opening her own gym, and SportsRock Gymnastic & Cheer became her new focus. Her love and passion for the sport of gymnastics has been with her since she was 8 years old. She also always enjoyed the challenge of teaching, so the “marriage” of these two disciplines was an easy decision to make.
Her motto for life is “Do What You Love and Love What You Do”. She lives that everyday and is very grateful that she has been able to do that. Debbie’s coaching philosophy is to have high expectations for her students, and to help them achieve more than what they think they can.
Debbie has taught all ages, levels and types of gymnastics for 38 years, coaching teams to State and National Championships in USAG and AAU. It is her desire to pass on her love and passion for gymnastics and cheer to as many children as possible.
In her spare time, if she has any, Debbie likes to go mountain climbing and hiking. She is an outdoor girl at heart. However, since she lives in Florida, she enjoys swimming and running as a form of exercise. She completed the OUC Half-Marathon in 1999 and the Disney Marathon in January 2000.
